Which months are best for Istanbul with kids?

Istanbul has four real seasons. For families, what matters most is being able to walk comfortably during the day, not having to hide from heat or rain, and reasonable crowds at the main sights. On that basis:

WhenWeatherCrowdsFor families
MarchCool, changeableMediumGood; pack a raincoat
April–MayMild, in bloomMedium–highOne of the best times
JuneWarm, long daysHighGood; rest at midday
July–AugustHot and humidVery highTough; sightsee morning and evening
September–OctoberMild, sea still warmMedium–highOne of the best times
November–FebruaryCool, wetLow (except holidays)Quiet and cheaper; museum-heavy plans

Spring: why are April and May ideal?

In April, Gülhane Park and many of the city’s parks fill with tulips during the Istanbul Tulip Festival. Days are perfect for walking, and a light jacket is enough for the evening. May is warmer and sunnier, great for ferry rides and rooftop breakfasts.

Note: European Easter holidays and Turkish public holidays can fall in this period. In 2027 Eid al-Adha (Kurban Bayramı) is 16–19 May, when domestic visitors fill Sultanahmet.

Summer: is July or August a good idea with kids?

Many families choose summer because schools are out. Midday temperatures often reach around 30°C, humidity is high, there is little shade in Sultanahmet Square and museum queues get long.

  • Put the big visits between 09:00 and 11:00.
  • Spend midday at the hotel or somewhere cool and indoors like the Basilica Cistern.
  • Late afternoon is perfect for the square, the park and the seafront.
  • An air-conditioned hotel close to Hagia Sophia makes a real difference in these months.

Autumn: September and October

The summer crowds thin out while the weather stays mild, the sea is still warm and the days are long enough. It is one of the easiest times for families with pre-school children. Rainy days start towards late October, so keep a backup plan (see our rainy day plan).

Winter: cold but calm

From December to February Istanbul is cool, windy and wet, with the occasional snowfall. In return it is Sultanahmet’s quietest season: short queues and usually lower hotel prices. A plan built around indoor sights such as Hagia Sophia, the Basilica Cistern, Topkapı and the Archaeology Museums works well. Bring waterproof shoes and a raincoat; cobblestones get slippery in the rain.

Note: domestic family travel picks up during Turkey’s semester break (25 January – 5 February in 2027).

What is Sultanahmet like during Ramadan and Eid?

Ramadan (8 February – 8 March in 2027): most restaurants stay open during the day and visitors can eat normally. At iftar (sunset), Ramadan events and food stalls in Sultanahmet Square make the area very lively and crowded, a colourful experience for kids. Restaurants fill up just before iftar, so book ahead.

Eid al-Fitr (Ramazan Bayramı, 9–11 March 2027) and Eid al-Adha (Kurban Bayramı, 16–19 May 2027): Sultanahmet gets very crowded with domestic visitors. The Grand Bazaar may close on the first days of Eid, and museum and palace hours can change. If you visit then, check official websites and start early.

In 2027, Turkey’s second school mid-term break (8–12 March) falls in the same week as Eid al-Fitr, likely one of the busiest weeks of the year in Sultanahmet.

Islamic holidays move about 11 days earlier each year. Check the Diyanet calendar for exact dates.

How should you plan around school holidays?

  • Turkish school holidays (2026–2027): mid-term breaks 16–20 November 2026 and 8–12 March 2027, semester break 25 January – 5 February 2027; schools close on 25 June 2027.
  • European and Gulf holidays (Easter, summer, October half-term) bring more international visitors.
  • Book early for these periods; family and connecting rooms are the first to sell out.
  • Buy museum tickets in advance through official channels where possible and use the first hours of the day.

Whatever the season, staying close to Hagia Sophia makes a midday rest possible. See where to stay for areas and our family hotels.
