Istanbul layover: visiting Sultanahmet between flights
Key facts
| Shortest sensible layover | About 7–8 hours (9–10 hours is more relaxed with kids) |
|---|---|
| Airport (IST) → Sultanahmet | 45–75 min by car · 1.5 hours+ by Havaist bus or M11 + M2 + T1 |
| Be back at the airport | At least 3 hours before an international flight |
| Leaving the airport | You pass passport control; visa rules depend on nationality |
| Luggage | On a single through ticket bags are usually checked to the final destination; left luggage is available at the airport |
| Airline programmes | Turkish Airlines’ Touristanbul (free city tour) and Stopover; conditions depend on your ticket |
How long a layover do I need to see Sultanahmet?
A rough calculation: 45–60 minutes from landing through passport control to a car, 45–75 minutes to Sultanahmet, the same back, and at least 3 hours at the airport before an international departure. Under about 7 hours your time in the city shrinks to an hour or two and the risk grows; with children, a 9–10 hour layover is far more comfortable.
| Layover | Our suggestion |
|---|---|
| Under 6 hours | Stay at the airport; there is not enough time for the city. |
| 7–10 hours | Sultanahmet Square, Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and the Basilica Cistern area; go and return by taxi or transfer. |
| 10–24 hours | Half a day of sightseeing plus a meal; rest at a hotel if it runs overnight. |
| Overnight / 24 hours+ | Stay a night in Sultanahmet, sightsee early in the morning and head back in the afternoon. |
Passport, visa and luggage: how do I leave the airport?
To go from the transit area into the city you pass arrivals passport control. Some nationalities enter Türkiye visa-free, others need an e-Visa; always check the official e-Visa website for your passport.
- Luggage: on a single through ticket, checked bags are usually tagged to your final destination, so you only carry cabin bags. Ask at check-in if unsure.
- Left luggage: Istanbul Airport has a paid left-luggage service if you do not want to carry cabin bags around.
- On return you go through security and passport control again; at busy times this can take 45 minutes.
What can I see in Sultanahmet on a short layover?
Sultanahmet’s main sights are a few minutes’ walk from each other, so even a short visit covers a lot:
- Sultanahmet Square (Hippodrome): the Egyptian Obelisk and the German Fountain; an open, safe space for children.
- Blue Mosque: open to visitors outside prayer times; headscarves for women are handed out at the entrance.
- Hagia Sophia: across the square; foreign visitors pay for the gallery entrance and queue times vary.
- Basilica Cistern: indoors and cool, good in rain; expect a ticket queue.

Staying one night on a long layover: the easiest way with kids
If you land around midnight and fly out the next day, or the layover is longer than 12 hours, sleeping in a family hotel in Sultanahmet is usually much better than keeping children awake at the airport. Arrive in the evening, rest, see Hagia Sophia and the square early before the crowds, and return to the airport in the afternoon.
- Send the hotel your flight number and expected arrival time; the front desk waits for late check-ins.
- For transfers and child seats see our airport transport guide; we can arrange the transfer together with your booking.
- Turkish Airlines’ Stopover programme may include a hotel night on some tickets; check the conditions on the airline’s website.
