Istanbulkart or a contactless bank card?
On Istanbul’s metro, trams, buses, Marmaray and city ferries you pay by card at the turnstile; cash is not accepted. You have two options:
- Istanbulkart: bought from machines (Biletmatik) at stations and piers and topped up with cash or card. You get transfer discounts, and the same card can be tapped once for each passenger, so a family can travel on one card.
- Contactless bank card: accepted directly at turnstiles on many lines; foreign cards may carry exchange and transaction fees. Each passenger needs their own card.
Young children travel free up to a certain age; check the current age limit and fares on the official Istanbulkart website.
The T1 tram: where can I go from Sultanahmet?
The T1 is the backbone of the historic peninsula. From Sultanahmet you reach these places with no changes:
| Stop | What is there | From Sultanahmet |
|---|---|---|
| Gülhane | Gülhane Park (playground), back entrance of Topkapı Palace, Archaeology Museums | 1 stop |
| Sirkeci | Marmaray (Sabiha Gökçen and the Asian side) | 2 stops |
| Eminönü | Ferry piers, Spice Bazaar, New Mosque | 3 stops |
| Karaköy / Tophane | Galataport cruise terminal, walk up to Galata Tower | 4–5 stops |
| Kabataş | Dolmabahçe Palace, funicular to Taksim | End of the line |
| Çemberlitaş / Beyazıt-Kapalıçarşı | Grand Bazaar, walk to Süleymaniye | 1–2 stops (towards Bağcılar) |
The T1 is low-floor, so strollers are easy to take on board. It gets very crowded 8–10 am, 5–7 pm and around midday, so travel outside those times if you can.
Ferries to the Bosphorus and the Asian side
For children, the ferry is the most fun way to travel in Istanbul. Regular city ferries leave Eminönü pier for Üsküdar and Kadıköy; the crossing takes 15–25 minutes and you pay with an Istanbulkart. Short Bosphorus tours by the city ferry company also leave from Eminönü. Timetables change with the season, so check the Şehir Hatları website.
Taxis: how to take one and what to watch for
- Make sure the meter is switched on at the start; use taxis from a rank or booked through an app rather than drivers who approach you around Sultanahmet Square.
- Taxi-hailing apps are widely used in Istanbul and can show the fare before the ride.
- Taxis rarely have child seats; for an airport trip with a baby we recommend a pre-booked transfer.
- Carry your hotel’s address written in Turkish; drivers may ask for directions in the narrow side streets.

Frequently asked questions
Can several people use one Istanbulkart?
Yes. Tap the same card once for each passenger at the turnstile; it just needs enough balance.
Which tram stop is closest to Sultanahmet?
The Sultanahmet stop on the T1 line is a few minutes from Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque. Gülhane is closer for Topkapı Palace and Gülhane Park.
Do children travel free on Istanbul public transport?
Young children ride free up to a certain age. Check the current age limit and discount card rules on the official Istanbulkart website.
Can I use a contactless bank card on public transport?
On many lines you can tap it directly at the turnstile. Each passenger needs a separate card and foreign cards may carry fees, so an Istanbulkart is usually more practical for families.
