How do I get from Galataport to Sultanahmet?

Galataport is the cruise terminal on the Bosphorus shore between Karaköy and Tophane. After leaving the ship there are three ways to the old city:

T1 tram (most practical)

  1. Walk out of the port to Kemeraltı Street; the Tophane or Karaköy T1 stop is a few minutes away.
  2. Board towards Bağcılar; the tram crosses the Galata Bridge and stops at Eminönü, Sirkeci and Gülhane before Sultanahmet.
  3. From the stop, Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque are a few minutes’ walk.

Taxi or transfer

Taxis wait outside the port; the distance is short but traffic around Karaköy and Eminönü can be heavy. With luggage and small children, ask your hotel for a door-to-door transfer.

On foot

In good weather and without bags, walking over the Galata Bridge is lovely (40–50 minutes), but the climb to Sultanahmet and the crowds make it tiring with kids and suitcases.

When should I head back to the ship? A day plan

On a short port day the most efficient plan is: take the T1 to Sultanahmet in the morning, see the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia and the Basilica Cistern, and after lunch take the tram back from Gülhane Park. Leave at least 1–1.5 hours before the ship’s all-aboard time; traffic and crowded trams around Eminönü can cause unexpected delays.

If your cruise starts or ends in Istanbul, staying a night or two in Sultanahmet before or after is the most relaxed option for families; the port is linked by tram with no changes.

How do I get from Esenler or Alibeyköy bus station to Sultanahmet?

Esenler Bus Station (Büyük İstanbul Otogarı)

  1. Take the M1 metro from the station inside the terminal and get off at Aksaray.
  2. Walk a few minutes from Aksaray to the Yusufpaşa T1 stop (follow the signs).
  3. Take the T1 towards Kabataş and get off at Sultanahmet.

It takes about 45–60 minutes in total, unaffected by traffic. Late at night or with lots of luggage, a taxi is easier.

Alibeyköy bus terminal

Some coach companies drop passengers at Alibeyköy. From there take the T5 tram along the Golden Horn towards Eminönü and change to the T1, or take a taxi directly. Check current routes on the Metro Istanbul website.

Tips with kids, strollers and luggage

  • The T1 tram is low-floor, so boarding with a stroller is easy, but it can be very crowded around midday.
  • Every passenger needs a fare; one Istanbulkart can be tapped for several people. See our Istanbulkart and public transport guide.
  • Save your hotel’s exact address and pin on your phone; Sultanahmet’s side streets are narrow and taxi drivers may ask for directions.
  • Tell us your arrival time on WhatsApp and we will ask the hotel about early check-in or leaving bags in advance.
