Which option is best with kids?
Short version: with a stroller, several suitcases and little ones, book a private transfer; with light luggage and older kids, the Havaist bus works well; if you want to avoid traffic and don’t mind changes, take the rail route. Late at night rail and bus services thin out or stop, so a taxi or transfer is often the only practical choice.
| Option | Time (approx.) | Changes | With stroller and bags |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private transfer | 45–75 min (IST) | None, door to door | Easiest; child seat on request |
| Taxi | 45–75 min (IST) | None | Easy; usually no child seat |
| Havaist bus | 90–120 min | None; short walk from the last stop | Luggage hold, moderate |
| Metro + tram | 90+ min | 2–3 | Hard; stairs and crowds possible |
How do you get from Istanbul Airport (IST) to Sultanahmet?
Private transfer
Give your flight number in advance and the driver meets you at arrivals with a name sign, and waits if you are delayed. Istanbul taxis rarely carry child seats, so if you are travelling with a baby or toddler ask the transfer company for a child seat. Your hotel can usually arrange a transfer too; message us on WhatsApp and we will help through the hotel.
Havaist bus
Havaist is Istanbul Airport’s official bus service and it runs a line to Sultanahmet. The bus bays are signposted from arrivals and luggage goes in the hold. You pay with an Istanbulkart or bank card; cash is not accepted. Depending on traffic, the ride takes 1.5–2 hours. Line numbers, routes and fares change from time to time, so check Istanbul Airport’s transport page.
Metro + tram
- Take the M11 metro from the airport to Gayrettepe.
- Change to the M2 (towards Yenikapı) and get off at Vezneciler-İstanbul Üniversitesi.
- Walk 5–10 minutes to the Beyazıt-Kapalıçarşı T1 stop and ride 2 stops towards Kabataş to Sultanahmet.
It beats the traffic, but two changes, long escalators and packed carriages at rush hour make it tiring with a stroller and suitcases, and you can’t know in advance whether every lift is working.
How do you get from Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) to Sultanahmet?
Sabiha Gökçen is on the Asian side, so you have to cross the Bosphorus (by bridge, the Eurasia Tunnel or Marmaray). Journey times depend heavily on traffic.
By rail: M4 + Marmaray + T1
- Take the M4 metro from the airport station towards Kadıköy and get off at Ayrılık Çeşmesi.
- Change to Marmaray towards the European side and get off at Sirkeci (the train runs under the Bosphorus, which kids usually love).
- From Sirkeci take the T1 tram 2 stops to Sultanahmet, or walk 12–15 minutes uphill.
Bus, taxi and transfer
Havabüs runs from Sabiha Gökçen to Taksim and Kadıköy; check Havabüs or your airline for any current direct service to Sultanahmet. Taking the ferry from Kadıköy to Eminönü and then the T1 is fun for kids but a hassle with luggage. By taxi or private transfer, expect around 60–90 minutes.
What should you know about taxis?
- Use an official taxi rank and make sure the meter is running.
- Ride-hailing apps work in Istanbul and show a fare estimate, which avoids haggling.
- Bridge and motorway tolls may be added to the fare; that is normal.
- Some Sultanahmet streets are pedestrianised or very narrow; ask your hotel in advance for the exact address and the nearest drop-off point.
Tips for strollers, luggage and kids
- Istanbulkart: buy one from the machines at the airport; one card can be tapped for several people. Young children ride free up to an age limit; check the current rule on metro.istanbul.
- A light folding stroller makes the metro and tram much easier; use the space by the tram doors.
- Arrival time: city traffic peaks around 07:00–10:00 and 16:00–20:00; plan your transfer accordingly.
- Early check-in: on a morning arrival, ask the hotel for early check-in or luggage storage; a rest on day one matters for kids.
