Where can you go with kids in Sultanahmet when it rains?

The good news: most of Sultanahmet’s big sights are indoors anyway. The bad news: the cobbled streets between them get slippery and there is little shelter on the square. So on a rainy day, the trick is to build a route of indoor stops linked by short walks. Most of the options below are within 10 minutes of Hagia Sophia.

Basilica Cistern

The rainy-day classic. Being underground, it doesn’t care about the weather, and the dim lights, fish and Medusa heads fascinate children. Queues get longer on wet days, so go early. Info at yerebatan.com.

Şerefiye (Theodosius) Cistern

A smaller, lesser-known and usually calmer Byzantine cistern. The light and projection show on its columns and walls impresses kids. It is about a 10-minute walk from Sultanahmet towards Çemberlitaş.

Hagia Sophia and the Hagia Sophia History and Experience Museum

Hagia Sophia’s visitor gallery (ticketed, separate entrance) works in the rain too. The Hagia Sophia History and Experience Museum, in a historic building by Sultanahmet Square, tells the building’s 1,500-plus-year story through audiovisual displays, an easy way for school-age kids to understand it. Current info at muze.gov.tr.

Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts

In the İbrahim Pasha Palace on the west side of Sultanahmet Square; carpets, manuscripts and an ethnography section suit older kids, and it is usually quiet.

Great Palace Mosaic Museum

Inside the Arasta Bazaar behind the Blue Mosque. The mosaics that once paved the Byzantine palace show animals, hunting scenes and children at play: ideal for a short, small visit.

Are the museums good for kids?

Istanbul Archaeology Museums

Next to the Gülhane Park entrance, a large museum spread over three buildings. Giant sarcophagi, statues and ancient finds impress older children. With little ones, don’t try to see it all; pick one or two halls. Check hours and prices on muze.gov.tr.

Museum of the History of Science and Technology in Islam

Inside Gülhane Park. Astronomical instruments, clocks and working models appeal to curious kids. A short walk through the park gets you there.

Topkapı Palace

The treasury, sacred relics and weapons collection are indoors, but you walk between halls through open courtyards. Fine in light rain, not much fun in a downpour. Closed on Tuesdays.

Shopping in the rain: the Grand Bazaar and the Spice Bazaar

The Grand Bazaar is, as the name suggests, a huge covered market with hundreds of shops. It is 2 stops from Sultanahmet on the T1 (Beyazıt-Kapalıçarşı) or about 15–20 minutes on foot. It is closed on Sundays and on the first days of religious holidays. Hold hands in the crowds and agree on a meeting point.

The Spice Bazaar is in Eminönü (T1 Eminönü stop) and also covered. Stalls of spices, Turkish delight and dried fruit are a colourful experience for kids, and many sellers offer a taste.

A sample rainy-day plan

  1. 09:00 Basilica Cistern (about 45 min).
  2. 10:00 Hagia Sophia visitor gallery (45–60 min).
  3. 11:15 Hagia Sophia History and Experience Museum or the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts.
  4. 12:30 A warm lunch: lentil soup and home-style dishes at an esnaf lokantası.
  5. 13:30 Rest at the hotel.
  6. 15:00 Istanbul Archaeology Museums, or the T1 to the Grand Bazaar.
  7. 17:00 Hot drinks and pudding at a muhallebici or tea house.

Rainy-day options outside Sultanahmet

Some popular indoor spots for kids are outside Sultanahmet, so allow half a day by taxi or public transport:

  • Panorama 1453 History Museum: tells the story of the 1453 conquest in a 360-degree panoramic painting; near the Topkapı stop on the T1 line (about 25–30 minutes by tram from Sultanahmet).
  • Rahmi M. Koç Museum: on the Golden Horn in Hasköy; trains, cars, planes and ships make it a favourite for kids who love machines. 20–40 minutes from Sultanahmet by taxi, depending on traffic.

Note: Miniatürk is often suggested, but it is not in Sultanahmet; it sits on the northern shore of the Golden Horn (Sütlüce) and is mostly outdoors, so it is not a good rainy-day choice.

To see when rain is most likely, read the best time to visit; for sunny days, see things to do with kids.

Rainy-day tips with babies and toddlers

  • A stroller rain cover plus a baby carrier is the winning combo: stairs indoors, rain outdoors.
  • Cobblestones and marble steps get very slippery; wear non-slip shoes.
  • Indoor sights get longer queues on rainy days; use the first hours of the day.
  • Staying close to Hagia Sophia makes it easy to pop back and change wet clothes.

Frequently asked questions

What can you do in Sultanahmet with kids on a rainy day?

The Basilica Cistern, Hagia Sophia, the Hagia Sophia History and Experience Museum, the Istanbul Archaeology Museums and the covered Grand Bazaar, all a short walk or a few T1 tram stops apart.

Is Miniatürk near Sultanahmet?

No. Miniatürk is in Sütlüce on the northern shore of the Golden Horn and is mostly outdoors, so it does not suit rainy days.

When is the Grand Bazaar closed?

The Grand Bazaar is closed on Sundays and on the first days of religious holidays. It is 2 T1 tram stops or a 15–20 minute walk from Sultanahmet.

Is the Basilica Cistern good for kids?

Yes, for most children it is the most exciting place in Sultanahmet. It is dim and has stairs, so a baby carrier is easier than a stroller.
